"Back In Black" was a song by AC/DC, appearing as the first track on side two of their 1980 album, "Back In Black". Known for its opening guitar riff, the song was AC/DC's tribute to their former singer Bon Scott. It peaked in the U.S. at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981 and was No. 51 on Billboard's Top Tracks chart, which debuted in March 1981. The song was ranked No. 4 by VH1 on their list of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs, and in 2009, it was named the second greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1. It was also ranked No. 187 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The same magazine has also ranked "Back In Black" number 29 on The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time. Released on 25 July 1980, "Back In Black" was the seventh AC/DC album and the first recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption at the age of 33, and was dedicated to him. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but they ultimately decided to continue and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on "Highway To Hell", was again brought in to produce. The recordings were made at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and Electric Lady Studios in New York, where the album was also mixed. The album has sold an estimated 49 million copies worldwide to date, making it the second-highest selling album of all time behind "Thriller" by Michael Jackson., and the best-selling hard rock or heavy metal album, as well as the best-selling album ever released by a band. AC/DC are an Australian rock group, formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Although the band are commonly classified as hard rock and are considered a pioneer of heavy metal, they have always classified their music as rock and roll. To date they are one of the highest grossing bands of all time. As of 2010, AC/DC have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 71 million albums in the United States. AC/DC ranked fourth on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and were named the seventh Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time by MTV. In 2004, AC/DC were ranked number 72 in the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
